Great value over time
Update: 9/15/2021They are still going strong. Everything I said previously applies, and I'm just as satisfied if not more. Smart mapping is still problematic. The Roomba and Braava don't share maps. So each one has to create it's own map and you have to manage them separately. I have also ended up moving the base station a few times because of changes and remodeling I'm doing, and each time the map is completely lost and has to be re-learned. It doesn't really bother me because I just do clean all jobs and let it run until it's completely done. The other issue I've had which I don't think I can really blame on the roomba is that my bed has legs that are kind of an arc (sort of like a rainbow) from the mattress level to the floor. This creates "ramps" where the legs meet the floor. At least every other if not two out of three times the roomba will get stuck on the ramp. I wish it wouldn't, but I'm not going to get bent out of shape, I can see why it's a problem. I just close the bedroom door if I'm going to be out of the house and have it run unattended, and only vacuum the bedroom when I'm home to assist it if it becomes stuck.Original review: 12/20/2020I purchased two of these. One was for me, and one for my mother. I am keeping mine, returned the one for my mother. I have a cat, and while it watches the roomba or just goes downstairs, it doesn't really bother the cat. My mother has a toy poodle that is terrified of the roomba and will hide for hours and leaves it shaking. I had to return hers because of this, not due to a functionality issue. If your pets are high strung, you might want to make a test run with someone else's if possible.Pro's:1. Works like a charm. It has only been stuck once (hung up on curtains that were on the floor)2. It took about three cleaning cycles to map the area. Once I did that, it cleans the floors while I'm at work and I come home to a clean house.3. The app is easy to use. I can start a cleaning cycle while I'm away, and I get notifications on my app if there are any issues (Only useful if I am home to help, but still..) It was simple to set up. Download app, press two buttons on roomba, enter wi-fi password, and 2 minutes later you're done and ready to go. I couldn't ask for a better experience.4. The app allows you to create zones in your house. You can do a clean all task or only do specific zones. You can also make no vacuum areas.Con's:1. It is somewhat loud, and when the roomba returns to the base it starts a VERY loud fan/vacuum in the base that sucks debris out of the roomba itself for a minute or so. If you sleep lightly, don't expect to run it while you're napping.2. I moved the roomba once to the other side of the living room. When I did, it lost the map of the house completely. It needed to re-map the floor from scratch. It didn't affect me too much because I hadn't customized the map or set up and named zones, but for someone who had, this could be very irritating.3. Other reviews complain about roomba's breaking and having to be replaced, especially after the 1 year warranty runs out. Because of this, I purchased the Assurian 3 year warranty. If comparing cost, consider the additional cost of the warranty if you have similar concerns.4. It leaves about an inch of uncleaned area around the roomba base. You will need to move them and clean around the bases periodically or if noticable.5. It gets 95% of the dirt off your floor. You will still need to vacuum once a month or so to ensure you clean under furniture, around the roomba base, baseboards, corners, nooks, and crannies. This is in the cons section, but no other robotic vacuum avoids this and I don't see it as a knock against the product, just something that you will deal with when you use ANY of these vacuums. The roomba isn't the perfect set it and forget it robot. You need to tidy up before vacuuming by ensuring there isn't anything on the floor such as clothes/cloth, cables, or anything else that could get sucked into the roomba (be cautious of phone charging cables attached to a wall charger). I don't say this as a con, because it's not like you wouldn't have to do this if you were vacuuming manually, but other reviews complain about this. Be aware of the completely reasonable limitations. This does however somewhat limit the benefit of the app because you need to prep the area before setting the roomba loose. It limits your ability to just randomly set a job up when you're away from home. I'm not disappointed or upset about it, just a need to pre-plan. I also purchased the S9+ vs the S9 which comes with the cleaning tower for an additional $200. You can buy it either way so it doesn't affect the review per se, but I feel the cost is worth not having to perform maintenance on the roomba every time you vacuum. The time I will save vs manually vacuuming a couple of times a week (cat fur) is well worth it over time. I chose the S9 instead of the 7 because of it's filtration and better corner cleaning. The hepa-lite filter seems to make a difference with cat dander as well. Supplies aren't unreasonable and appear that they will not be an onerous cost. I have hardwood and tile floors and do not use it on carpets so I can't make a judgement as to performance on carpets.

Don't waste your money!!!!
Please read all of this - my frustration with this product has finally gotten the better of me.This product is an absolute piece of garbage. The cleaning is ok and just ok. It does make it more convenient to keep the floors clean - I hate doing floors and toilets - but who doesn't.After researching and waiting, I was so excited to get this product on promotion during the holidays. However, my excitement has gone down the toilet and my experience has been way less than stellar. Now after having it for a little over 3 months, I have to figure out how to tell my husband that it's really not working and let's get something else. It's making me really want to do this #%&$!$%#@$%^&*%! If you know what I mean.I do have a lot of square footage in my home to map (about 2600 sq ft), so I was prepared to be patient. However, what I experienced as way beyond my expectations. It took 3.5 solid weeks of mapping to get both robots mapped. Several times I had to pick up the robot and start it in a room and pray it would find it's way back home. If and when it finally did, it would create a 2nd floor if you will in the app. It did finally merge with the first map but took a while.Smart mapping is dumb mapping - you have to run both of them separately to get 2 different maps with 2 different sets of room sizes and furniture locations. One can't work off the other and adjust for footprint size of the robot. It's a computer program and math - why can't you. Duh... that WOULD be smart mapping. Now, I magically have an extra room that got created within a room for no reason at all AND I CAN'T DELETE THE ROOM DIVIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to get rid of the unneeded room. (I have a triangle within the dining room.) I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app several times to no avail. The program keeps crashing on me. I've even tried it on a different device - NOTHING.All Smart Map does for you is start the 2nd robot after the first one is done - and then you have to wait until it's COMPLETELY done to start. So if robot 1 takes 1.5 hrs to complete several rooms, robot 2 can't start until after robot 1 is done. Smart would be that after robot 1 is out of an area robot 2 starts. So, in order to get floors done in a timely fashion, it's quicker and easier to start the 2nd robot while 1st is still going but out of the area.Don't get me started on the robots' performance. They both CRASH and I do mean CRASH into everything still. They go where they're not supposed to (Keep Out Zones) and don't go where they are (Clean Zones) - or they'll clean partial of an area. I've rebooted several times to no avail.I tile though out my home, so it should go fast and easy - right? Yeah - not! The vacuum doesn't get everything all the time and the mop...... The mop has a 12 inch pad that does a spot about 4 inches wide. No wonder it takes hours to do daily cleaning. The way IRobot has the system set up it sometimes takes 3-4-5-6 attempts at starting a cleaning job to get the robot to go. Then when it gets back it can take up to 15 minutes to save the cleaning map. I hate to think what would happen if I actually scheduled it to run a favorite at a certain time every day. Probably wouldn't start on time or at all.And don't try to just clean an area without having a favorite made. It doesn't like that. It won't start.Oh, and docking. The vacuum gets back ok the majority of the time, but the mop has a lot of issues. Just found it this morning not fully on the dock and not fully charged from 3 days ago. Looked like it was on but not. It even registered last week that it was back and docked properly. Before you ask - no pets or kids to interfere. Just my husband and I. He doesn't go near either robot and I know to step around.Customer service is a joke - I've been put on hold so they can check with someone else because they don't know. Customer service has to call customer service. There's a laugh!!!!! And if you check that IRobot can contact me, they don't - or if they do, it's a standard e-mail that follows a flow chart because Hey "You're too stupid to use the help they offer online" and all they do is re-repeat what you've already read and tried and done.

A big daily help
Buy this if you need a little help. This has been a time saver for my busy house with pets. I use it once a day in my downstairs extremely high traffic area for the kids and dogs. Give yourself about a week to really learn how to best use because there is a learning curve for it and the buyer. Do not buy this if you think it's going to expertly clean your house for you! It is a helper, it will not get every nook and cranny, or large items/clumps. Battery life is not as good as I expected, but I have a large home. The battery has to recharge between each use/room, and occasionally while in clean everywhere mode. It will take itself back to the charger and then resume it's job. This is just a fact and not good or bad considering the size of my home and the way it works it's way through the house. Just for reference, battery lasts about 1.5hrs to 2hrs max and my home is over 3500sqft.Pro: great suction power, and the self empty canister is WORTH the extra money. This little guy picks up all the pet hair, toy stuffing, dirt, and dog food. I have only mapped one room, everything else I use the vacuums everywhere function. I take it upstairs 1-2xs a week and manually empty the bin as needed while it works upstairs. My dogs are scared of it! So they leave it alone and get out of it's way. I can start it remotely from the app.Cons: it is very loud, but no louder than a normal vacuum. It does get stuck or need help occasionally, so I only run it when I am home or will be home within the hour. This just saves me frustration of coming home to a job not done. The app will only work on a single phone. I haven't been successful with it's Alexa command, and I have several household items paired with my Alexa devices.
