one of the classic albums of all time !
i came into the world of NIN rather late, not until i read about this sacd in fact, well what on earth have i been missing ?so immediately after listening to this wonderful album i then decided to buy all the NIN back catalogue and came across the whole unique musical world of trent reznor.but anyway back to this album, now i did not hear the original version of this album but having heard a few multi channel sacds i will keep to the actual point of this review i.e. if you want to know about how good this record is then read the reviews of the standard issue version,i will keep to how good this sacd is.well ,so far many of my sacd purchases have been a little bit of a letdown.some times you buy one and it is not in surround,e.g. the sacd version of peter gabriel's album number 4 is NOT IN MULTI CHANNEL.yes it is a sacd but not in surround.quite frankly i am becoming quite bemused over the amount of technical jargon and insider knowledge that is now needed to work out whether you will hear the disc in good quality or excellent quality,is DTS better than dvda? what about 24,48 96 bit resolution etc etc,i always thought dts was the better option but seemingly no.dvda in 96 bit would be bettr, well can we please have one industry standard ?thank god that this disc is the best of all types, don,t ask me why, but it is.if you have a proper sacd player then you will be presented with one of the highest quality recording i have ever heard.ever !obviously, you also have the excellent second disc with the rare versions of various b sides remixes and the joy division cover version which is very good indeed.but for any hifi nut who has the real gear then this one sacd will show you exactly what a good multichannel will do.if you only ever buy one sacd( which,of course you wil not if you have paid out all the money for one !!!!) but make this sacd one of your first purchases and it will not let you down.

fantastic
it's kind of hard to be objective about an album i've listened to so many times and STILL find love for. there's very few albums from the 1990's that have survived the test of time for me, so this re-issue is something like digging up an old leonard cohen record and rediscovering the joy of hearing the great mans lyrical ability. the 5.1 mix does something i thought impossible, i'm hearing things i missed before. when i go back to the original, there they are, just tucked away so that i never noticed them before. the "white noise" at the end of the first track had my head spinning around as the various layers seemed to race around the speakers, much better than the "wall of noise" effect of the original. but i digress, there will be very few people looking at buying this who don't already own the original, so i'll leave the main disc alone...the bonus disc is a strange beast, but well worth having. there are tracks from "further down the spiral" and beyond, and singles from the album. we also get "dead souls" from the soundtrack of "the crow" - possibly not trent's most original track, but a complete corker anyway. what is of most interest though, are the demo tracks. they give a real insight into the 'hidden' side of the downward spiral, and of the method of complete digital recording which had never been used so exclusively before. absolutely everything was record on hard-disks and the tracks could then be edited together and changed until trent felt he'd got what he wanted. it's strange hearing familiar songs, with certain sounds and lyrics that made it to the final release, but surrounded by all sorts of stuff that didn't make it. a real eye-opener, and well worth the money.

A more mature album
This is a far more mature album than NIN's first attempt, and a move more towards the metal side of Trent Reznor's personality. The lyrics are just as brutal and angry, but the songwriting has gained a maturity that was missing from the first album.Trent Reznor has always been able to combine the industrial/techno/metal leanings of his songwriting with good hook lines that any pop act would be proud of. Whether it's a guitar riff or a keyboard hook, he puts one in every song. Standout tracks are 'March of the Pigs', 'Closer' and the kind of warm/uneasy feeling 'Hurt'.There are a few low points here though, including the opening 'Mr Self Destruct', which is an incoherent thrash which sets the tone badly for the rest of the CD. This is a great CD overall, and along with 'Pretty Hate Machine', far better than the later albums where NIN seemed to be just trying to capture previous glories.

The Downward Spiral - the definitive Nine Inch Nails album
This record established Trent Reznor as a major artist - it became the album that would enshrine his legacy as taking industrial music to the next level brining transgressive themes of S&M, mental health, and the man machine complex into the mainstream. Adam Steiner - author of Into The Never - Nine Inch Nails & The Creation Of THe Downward Spiral. After this record nothing would ever be the same again. The 2017 remaster is superb and needs to be heard on vinyl to be fully appreciated!

Mind blowingly good
This is one of those albums I used to have and then, like many others over the years, I lent it to someone and never got it back. My gods am I glad I bought it again. I'd forgotten just how amazing this album is. So happy to have it again.

Masterpiece of an Album
"The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails is a groundbreaking album that pushes the boundaries of industrial rock music and that has always resonated with me. Trent Reznor's raw and emotive vocals combined with the aggressive instrumentation create a dark and immersive listening experience. Each track is meticulously crafted, taking the listener on a journey through themes of despair, addiction, and self-destruction. From the pulsating energy of "Closer" to the haunting melodies of "Hurt," every song leaves a lasting impression. "The Downward Spiral" is a masterpiece that continues to captivate audiences with its raw intensity and emotional depth.
