I am just getting into Mate, and this is my second gourd and bombilla set. I am a big fan of this style.The first cup I got is the actual gourd style, as in a cup made out of an actual hollowed-out gourd. This is the traditional style, which I thought would be the best way to start. I do love that gourd, but those have a few drawbacks.This insulated stainless steel style, while probably frowned on by purists, has many advantages.First, it's insulated. When you are drinking Mate, the general method is to drink the few ounces in the cup and then add more water from a thermos or kettle, so keeping the water hot is not a problem. The insulated cup is not so much needed for keeping the water hot, but for keeping my hands from holding a hot gourd.You don't have to cure it, or scrape it like you do with the organic gourd style, and maintenance is easy. It is easily cleaned by hand and also dishwasher safe. You also don't have to worry about mold like you do with the organic gourds.You can travel with this. I like the lid and the fact that it fits in a cup holder. I never thought to bring my gourd with me when going out, but now I often make a cup to go or take it on walks, as it fits in the stroller cup holder. This adds a whole new dimension to my mate drinking game.I like the way the gourd fits in my hand, and the color is subtle. I don't really need 2 bombillas or 2 brushes, but it can't hurt to have extra.I am really enjoying my newfound love of mate and exploring this past time. If you are just getting into it too, you can't go wrong with this set. If you only have the organic gourd style, you should also try this one. It is a no-fuss way to enjoy mate.
