The best way honestly is to go to YouTube and get a video that shows u how, there so many and its supper simple. Most of these products are meant for advanced users, use caution, electricity is not a toy, weather it be DC or AC. Stay safe

Q: I'm trying to understand the wiring diagram. I want to measure the current from my solar panels charging the battery. Are the panels side : "load"?

What I have is the yellow load connected to the battery side. The blue connected to the neg solar panel side. I am using the meter to measure three combined solar inputs to the batteries.

Q: Should this meter show a load when nothing is connected to the battery? It reads 1.2 amps and about 20w with no load on the battery

It depends upon how you have it configured as to the resistance of the shunt.

Q: I'm confused. If using to measure Solar charge current, which side of the shunt is load? Will reversal damage meter?

The side of the shunt going to the batteries should be connected to the load side of the shunt (yellow). The Solar panels should be connect to the battery side of the shunt (blue). Think of it as what's supplying the power ( the solar panels) and what's receiving the power (the batteries). The panels become the battery and the batteries become the load. Reversing them won't hurt anything it just won't read anything. It will always say zero.
