Fostex’s model PC-1e is a simple passive volume controller, which aids easy control of desktop PC speaker systems at the same time as reducing distortion introduced through digital volume control.Constructed from a durable metal chassis, available in black or white, the PC-1e comes complete with a 3.5mm – 3.5mm stereo mini jack cable for connection to the audio card output found on PCs. The second cable, RCA – RCA stereo, takes the output of the PC-1e to feed active speakers or amplifiers. Where desktop monitors have only a 3.5mm stereo input, 3rd party RCA – 3.5mm cables can be usedNot only does the PC-1e allow for convenient volume control but it offers a far superior method to control volume levels. Once connected, the PC digital volume can be set to maximum, whilst the PC-1e is used to passively attenuate this full level signal. Controlling volume directly from the PC, in software, ultimately introduces higher levels of distortion, especially if the volume control on the active speaker is set higher to compensate for lower PC settings. Therefore, users are advised to set the PC output volume to full and the speaker volume to around the 3pm point (or ¾ of the maximum) and then use only the Fostex PC-1e to adjust levels.SpecificationInputConnector: 3.5mm stereo mini jackOutputAnalogueConnector: Stereo RCAGeneralDimensions: 38 (H) x 52 (W) x 60 (D) mmWeight: approx. 120gSupplied accessories: 1 x 3.5mm – 3.5mm stereo mini jack cable (80cm), 1x RCA – RCA stereo cable (1m), manual

Works nicely
Bought this for our sleigh so that Santa can turn down the deafening music when people want to talk to him on his rounds (not even kidding: have installed it on a Round Table Christmas sleigh).Build quality seems to be very good. Nice feel to the control. Time will tell how long it lasts, but indoors, on a desk, I'd imagine this would last a good long while.Size wise, someone mentioned that it's about the size of a box of matches. I was a little surprised at how small it is, but then I suppose it doesn't need to be large. Also comes with a 3.5mm cable, and two phono cables (one red, one white). Nicely packaged. Happy buyer.

Just the job if what you want is variable attenuation
Although sold as a gain control for speakers (and the suggested use case is feeding a laptop output into a pair of active loudspeakers) it might be more correctly described as a variable attenuator. There is no amplification available (and generally if you want this, none needed) but it has more general applications as an interface between digital devices.I wanted to attenuate a line level output from a mixer which I was feeding into a digital recorder as the output was a bit "hot" for the recorder. In this application it is ideal as I can match the "correct" level on the mixer to the "correct" level that the recorder needs (which probably is 10dB different).Build quality is excellent (up to the normal Fostex standard) and the feel of the control is suitably smooth but stiff.I only rate the device as 4 stars as for my application I would have much preferred phono sockets in and out rather than stereo 3.5mm in and phono out which the device has. It's also a little pricey but actually given the relatively small market, not unreasonably priced and not in the hifi "gold plated mains plug" realms !All in all, I'm very pleased with it.

Used to control RCA outs of a HIFI to an amped ceiling speakers, work a treat and great build.

Small
A really well made product as i would have expected, my only gripe would be that i wasn't expecting it to be so small, however, i've connected it to a spare output on my mixer to control the input to a pair of powered speakers and it works great!

Works well.
Not as pretty as the Emotiva Control Freak, but Emotive don't seem to be making them anymore. The Fostex PC-1eB works perfectly, however, with a nice smooth control and an easy to wire in connectors. The leads it's supplied with are two single RCA male to RCA male (one red, one white), and a stereo 3.5mm to 3.5mm. Unfortunately, neither of these were of any use to me; I needed two RCA Male Stereo to 3.5 mm Stereo, one for my DAC, which is RAC out to 3.5mm stereo in on the back of the Fostex unit and a second RAC Male Stereo pair to 3.5mm stereo lead to take the signal back to my speakers. I've got loads of cables knocking about so it wasn't a problem, but it would pay you to figure out what you need along with the Fostex so you're not disappointed when it arrives.

This is really well made for the price of just less than twenty pounds. Needed a volume control between input and output as brought a TDK boombox 2 and it clips the output if the input from line output is too great. I was expecting this to be cheap plastic but no it is all metal, nice and heavy so the rca cables do not move it or lift it up. Does what I wanted and I can now reduce the sound input with no loss of output quality. Very happy with it. Just leaving this review as from the advert pictures it looks a bit cheap and plasticy but when get it and use it it is of a very high quality and all metal, so I was extremely pleasantly surprised. I am not linked to Fostex in anyway and paid for this myself from Amazon myself; just think in audio when something is reasonably priced and well made we should say so, as there is so much rubbish or extremely overpriced stuff in audio.

High quality sound, high quality components, compact size
Bought this to provide a volume control so I could attach a pair of passive speakers to a bluetooth audio converter. It was smaller and more stylish in real life than it looks in the pictures. The components are what you'd expect from the worlds #1 maker of professional studio equipment, and the sound quality is unaffected by adding this to the set-up.It comes with two 50cm RCA cables, and one with male 3.5mm jack on both ends they're not great quality, but I didn't expect cables at all so they helped to get me going faster than had I had to go digging in boxes for cables! There's nothing not to like about this, go on, buy it, you know you want to.

Simple little control knob
Handy volume/gain control without breaking the bank. Knob has a sturdy feel. Only criticism is the mismatch in input output socket types, the same type would've been nicer. Great if you're outputting a line out to powered monitors with no volume control.
