Wild Mountain Thyme: A Novel

Very good
Certainly not as fulfilling as The Shell Seekers, but an excellent story with interesting characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it was over too soon.

The book was in rougher shape than I expected.
I believe I paid too much for the very rough copy of this book.

So far, it is not the book I expected it to be....
I purchased this book as I had seen some excerpts from the movie of the same title starring Jamie Dornan. I thought I would like to read the book expecting it to be like the movie, but so far I don't see any signs of that. The movie is about farming and the relationship between two families and their farms and how they are so intertwined. I am almost half-way through the book and see no signs of anything like this. Therefore, I am disappointed since it was not what I expected. It is a good enough story, and I will continue to read it; but it is just not what I expected.

Awesome
I have been a devoted fan of her work for years. Just reading and experiencing her books has always been a great treat for me. I have at least 7 of her novels and I don't expect to stop till I own them all.

Somewhat disappointed
I didn't think this was up to Rosamunde Pilcher's usual standards. It was very predictable.

Engaging story
Great read like all of her books. Hard to put down and a pretty quick read as well. Loved all the characters. Recommend.

It's wonderful, and exactly the type of book I love ...
I read "Shell Seekers" years ago, but hadn't read anything else of hers. A couple of weeks ago, a bunch of her novels were on sale, so I picked up four or five. I read "Wild Mountain Thyme" over the weekend. It's wonderful, and exactly the type of book I love the most. Detailed, complex characters with a love story, but also an exploration of family and community. Her writing is touching without being sentimental, and humorous at times, so much so that I laughed out loud more than once. Detailed setting description reads like moving pictures, and also depicts how 'place' influences character and plot. Her characters are so keenly depicted that the reader knows them like they might a real friend. In addition, although flawed, her characters are good people, ones you'd want in your life and completely invested in - longing for their happy ending. I haven't had the feeling of wishing a novel would never, ever end in a long time. I wanted to crawl inside the book and live with the characters, thinking about them long after I turned the last page. I'm like a kid in the candy store, knowing that there are many, many more of her books to enjoy.

Too stupid to live
If I were Rosamund Pilcher, I would remove this book from circulation. I wouldn't be able to gather up all the hard copies around, but I sure could make sure it wasn't available in ebook format. Surely she doesn't need the money.I love Pilcher, mainly because her people have just plain good sense. I was very surprised when Victoria Bradshaw turned out to be such a ninny. Then I looked at the copyright date: 1978. Okay, I thought, maybe this was one of her earlier novels, but a check of her output shows this is not so. I don't know what happened. Maybe she listened to bad advice from a new editor. Maybe she wanted to experiment with a weak heroine. I don't know what the explanation is, but Victoria is too stupid to live.Is there anyone who doesn't know to change the locks when your live-in lover dumps you for another woman, marries her and fathers a child with her? I've never had a live-in lover, but know that's what I would do.Second, when you walk in on said lover years after he leaves, and he's sitting in your apartment with his son he has abducted from the maternal grandparents, you call the cops. What you don't do Is turn your life upside down and accompany him to Scotland and assume all care of said child. The mother is dead, so apparently the lover is in need of another dumb women to take care of him and the offspring. Why he doesn't leave the kid with the grandparents is never quite clear. I guess he regards the kid as some kind of possession, because he never shows any affection for the poor childThis is *not* a typical Pilcher book. If it were, I would never read another. Fortunately, she has a huge body of work filled with sensible women who have good judgement. They're not perfect. They make mistakes, but they don't make the same mistake over and over again the way this one does.Skip this stinker and read one of the many good books she wrote. You'll be glad you did.

Couldn’t put it down!
I’ve now read several books by this wonderful author, and this is one of my favourites. I absolutely couldn’t put it down and had to finish it by torchlight in bed last night while husband was fast asleep because I just had to finish it.Slightly dated, as no smartphones etc in the book, but that doesn’t make any difference to the enjoyment of the reader. Intriguing characters, stunning descriptions of Scotland, and such a good story. I just immersed myself in it, which is particularly great right now.I actually enjoyed this as much as The Shell Seekers. It’s not as long and cleverly complicated , but a good solid enjoyable read as it’s an interesting story beautifully written. I thoroughly recommend it.

THAT THE BOOK WILL BE INTERESTING AND BELIEVABLE
Rosamund Pilcher was one of the great fiction writers. My family have read most of her writings, all done with beautiful English and all "clean as a whistle ". The latter is a bit of a rarity in modern books of fiction which are usually laced with a plethora of swear-words etc. which add nothing to the text or to the enjoyment of the particular book.

Happy ever after
A good Rosamund Pilcher read. Beautiful scenery and evocative language brings the place to life. The usual good character studies and although the story line is predictable it still feels comforting. A lovely easy holiday read.

A reassuringly Pilcher-resque read
I have loved Rosamund Pilcher's ever since borrowing "Coming Home" from my grandmother as a teenager. Wild Mountain Thyme delivers Pilcher's trademark beautiful description of the natural landscape- of Scotland this time though, rather than Cornwall. She also throws some old fashioned romance and a pinch of heartbreak and hint of tragedy. All in all a really satisfying read. If I had to make a negative remark about the book I would suggest that the closing line is a bit clichéd. However, this is just nitpicking because otherwise it is a highly enjoyable read.

Descriptive and atmospheric
Slow start and not sure where it was going but glad I kept on. Heartwarming for the most part for the best characters, but predictable towards the end. But the value of RP's descriptive writing allows you to virtually be there and enjoy getting to know the characters. Excellent book.
